Function

AFGFR-1 protection relays provide arc energy reduction in accordance with NEC® Articles 240.67 and 240.87 for systems rated 1200 A and above. Designed for use with bolted-pressure contact switches, air circuit breakers, and fusible disconnect switches equipped with a shunt-trip operator, the AFGFR-1 detects arc flash events through Rogowski coil arc flash sensors and delivers high-speed tripping to reduce incident energy. By connecting to a ground fault sensor encompassing all phase and neutral conductors, the relay also provides Class 1 ground fault protection.

Advantages

Supports NEC compliance

The combined arc flash and ground fault functions of the AFGFR-1 relay supports compliance with NEC requirement for arc energy reduction during maintenance activities (Articles 240.67 & 240.87) and service entrance GFPE requirements (Article 230.95).

Retrofit Friendly

- AFGFR-1 relays use flexible Rogowski coil arc flash sensors, simplifying routing in tight electrical equipment.
- The open-ended concept of Rogowski coil sensors eliminates the need to disconnect or re-terminate power conductors.
- Pre-terminated, 6-ft lead wires with factory-installed connectors enable quick, error-free wiring to the relay.

System Testing Without Service Interruption

- Integrated Push-To-Test (PTT) buttons allow periodic field verification of arc flash and ground fault functions using primary injection testing.
- The built-in Shunt Trip Bypass control button allows full end-to-end system testing including arc flash sensors, ground‑fault sensors, wiring, and trip circuit without energizing the upstream shunt trip device, simplifying commissioning, periodic testing, and compliance verification.

Comprehensive Sensor Selection

Wide selection of arc flash and ground fault sensor, available in multiple sizes to accommodate varied equipment layouts and applications.

Clear post‑event Indication

Front‑panel LEDs, positive visual trip indicators, and a battery‑backed Trip Result function provide clear confirmation of arc‑flash or ground‑fault events, even after loss of control power—supporting faster troubleshooting, event documentation, and maintenance records required by AHJs.
